Facts Homes on raised foundations with elevated crawlspace's often have unsuspected problems associated with moisture. Hydrostatic pressure, capillary action, ventilation problems, high humidity underneath the home, drainage problems, and cracks or breaks in plumbing, will all contribute to the air quality of your home, not to mention the deteroration and rot occuring undenetath the home.
Your home is considered the "Envelope". Air is introduced through the vents in your crawlspace, and then rises through cracks in the flooring, un-insulated portions of wall areas, and other areas through the crawlspace, such as the HVAC system. This air then rises through the home carrying mold spores and MVOCs through the home, depositing spores on furniture, clothes, linens, porous and non-porous surfaces, and other areas that contain moisture. This in turn can create a bigger problem. The air is then circulated through the attic and out to the outdoor environment where the process begins again, also know as “Stack Effect”. Aspergillus is among the most common species associated with crawlspace mold and is often what homeowners can smell. Other molds can be present as well. Stachybotrys, although rarely airborne unless disturbed, also called "toxic mold", or "Black Mold" can be found on drywall and wooden material of the home. |
